Wilderness Map

Since I'm the unofficial cartographer for Sentience, I was pondering the future revision of the wilderness map, pending Vizzini's wilderness code.

We could just leave what we have right now, only more efficient, thus alleviating much of our memory requirements. That leaves little work to be done to the map other than perhaps deal with elevations of stuff, amongst other cosmetic things.

Or, we could enlarge the map, shifting parts of the map around, but leaving everything (aside from the polar regions) their current size. Considering we have two completely unused continents, I don't see that as a major problem. It would leave the relationship between all areas within a given continent the same, only they'd be shifted by some fixed distance. The ocean(s) would expand dramatically as well, leaving lots of room for ships to scurry about. But that is also a problem. You end up with a great big void of ocean... uneventual for the most part. Sailing around would be tedious at best, even though it would be a nice RP aspect to be out on the ocean for long periods of time.

Another idea could be to redo the entire wilderness for a larger map. Either scale up the landmasses to fit in with the size or make entirely different continents. Have a reasonable percentage of ocean, decide one what kinds of climates each continent should have (be it location on the map or by geologically determined), deciding where to put them so that they fit, etc.

Personally, I'm more for the last idea.

Should we make the wilderness map larger, how big should it be? The current one is 1538 by 1250. I'm sure we could have an even larger map, considering Vizzini boasts a much larger potential. Off the top of my head, I picked 4096 by 3072 for the size of the map.. yes. Huge!

Hey Nib, Might be worth updating the troops as to the recent developments on the wilds resizing front? Scott. (Vizz)
