We all know what they are FOR, but what in the heck are moonstones in general? Without leaving it at that question alone, I shall give some thoughts about other types of moonstones, aside from the black ones.
Primarily, the color of the moonstone should indicate the purpose and principle aspect of the substance. For instance, black moonstones can be accepted as the moonstones of the astral plane, as the astral spells (nexus, gate, portal, maze) require this. But what about white moonstone? blue? red? In my creations of things, I've come up with about four other colors for moonstones besides the black.
White moonstone I've used in a couple objects: a jewel that is acquired from Elyssa's trident as well as the blade of Andreas' Avenger sword. Both are used with aspects of cold associated with them. It would make sense for something white to be either cold related or something to do with peace or holiness. In some ways, the holiness also exists with this moonstone color. The Avenger deals out holy damage as well as having the frost weapons flag, so you could say that is the case. The sheer evilness of Elyssa influencing her trident would be ample to explain why the jewel from her weapon is merely cold.
Green moonstone I would consider to be the embodiment of Nature itself, able to give life as well as take it, but not lightly nor without consequences either way. I don't have any examples of this, I just feel that it would be an interesting moonstone form. The requirement of the black moonstone for various spells could shift to needing the green, such as silence or slow. Also, this moonstone could be used to AUGMENT spells that would be weakened otherwise, such as the three main necromancer spells (animate dead, raise dead and kill) having a stronger chance of working.
I used red moonstone in a mockup for a Reckoning quest once upon a time on the TP. I gave the red moonstone the scare flag as well as a great many feelings of violence, hence the association with the Reckoning. This being red could also give rise to it producing fire or having firey affects. Couple this with the violence and you have something that could reference demons quickly. Something to consider, yes. If red would represent fire, then blue moonstone could embody water and lightning (storms and whatnot).
I'm also creating a gemstone called Hearstone, which is an amethyst looking gem that possesses great internal energy and magic. I could make this a form of moonstone, the violet moonstone, that embodies pure energy. It could also be an avenue to black moonstone, if such a thing were possible.
So, back to the question I initially posed... what IS moonstone? More importantly, where did it come from and why is it here and have such powers?
