Ok, you've done global quests right? You've done those Retrieve/Slay/Rescue generated quests, right? You've done quests localized to an area or areas, right? Chances are, you've probably said yes to one of those quest types.
Well, how about expand the generated quests to include more task types:
Buy - You must buy the particular item. The city it is located it MAY be provided. Basically Retrieve but from shops.
Sell - Opposite action of Buy. The item may be given to you or you have to procure it.
Locate - same as Rescue, but for objects.
Goto - You must go to a particular place in an area.
Cast - Cast a particular spell in an area.
etc.
Another way to do tasks could be too make them have more than one way to do them. Say a task was to Take care of a mob that is being a menace. That COULD mean slay the mob. But it could also be accomplished by bringing the mob with you (say..... charm or some other way of grouping) back to the quest master.
Another idea is to keep the knowledge of whether you've completed a task hidden until you return back to the quest master. OR make that a toggle for those that wish to be hardcore and get more rewards. Of course, make it impossible to abuse it by disallowing the toggle to work while you are on a quest. :)
Also, how about tasks that are slightly broader and more in line with events that are occuring in the game. Say there is a plague that's broken out in a city, or the crops in a city are about to fail from insufficient rain. A task could be for you to correct such things, with bigger rewards since the tasks would most likely be more involved. Then again, that could be done by semi-global quests that are one-time, first come first serve type deals.
Anyways...
